Yeah, the score release is great. It's just enough music - though after seeing the movie again today (yeah, i dvd'd, too) I'm considering adding music from the isolated score and making a personal "bootleg." (I know it's an evil word, Peter... but it had to be used).~Jeron

I just finished a recording of the Iso track myself. It's a 2 CD set over 90 minutes worth of music.

I love this score!! I think it was an unregarded milestone in film music. It was very original and the thematic elements were so odd, especially for the Sci-fi genre. Definitely my favorite score of the year (so far), unfortunately I doubt it has any chance at the Oscars.About the score release. It's only a third of the music in the movie (if 90 minutes is the whole thing), but it does contain most of the significant parts. The only gripe I have is that it is missing the awesome music during the big subway duel scene. Other than that, it's a great CD and the sound quality is awesome. Of course the liner notes are non-existant and all the photos are in black and white, but this is not a problem with the CD itself.

P.S. I'm sure you're aware of this already, but just in case... The techno parts aren't part of the score. You'd need the song release to get those.

Actually though, some of the techno cues are isolated on the DVD. The lobby shootout from Propeller Heads and the bar scene at the beginning. There is a lot of great cues that are missing from the OST. The kung fu training fight is a cool cue. And many of the cues on the OST are expanded quite a bit on the DVD iso track.

Not only is this one of the best movies of the year, but the score is one of the best. Yes, there should have been a lot more but most of the good stuff is on here, including my personal favorite "Welcome to the Real World" where Keanu is full of pins. Wow! That music is awesome! Anyways, definitely get it.

Hey, just saw the movie today for a second time. It is definitely an amazing special effects movie. I love the movie! Although, I do have one gripe with it. I think the score gets drowned out a lot throughout the whole film. It has some great cues, unfortunately you can't hear them. It dissapoints me about what James referred to. The subway duel was a great cue and I think one of my favorite. I wish they threw it on the cd. Well, you should definitely pick it up Crono.Aaron

When I found out that the score was isolated on the DVD, I went straight to one of my friends who has a DVD player and a cd burner and asked him if would be able to burn all of the music, except the music in the bar at the beginning, onto a cd and he said he was able to do it, though he is not able to do it till Wednesday. I am so happy to be able to have all the music, especially the music during the lobby shootout, because the version on the various artist cd is not the same as in the movie. I can't wait till the movie comes out for sale on VHS, I don't own a DVD player yet

Bad news jasom. It isnt going to be sold on video. Im sure this will eventually change, but for the time beign they have no plans.
GET YOURSELF A DVD PLAYER!!! they are infinately superior to VHS and will eventually wipe them out. If any movie should only be viewed on DVD it is Matrix. Get yourself a drive or a player and get into the digital age.

Really? Wow, they said they werent gonna sell it because of the columbine thing(**** Tom Brocaw). 26 extra minutes? Tell me, is this a collector's edition or a director's cut? Cause if it's a collectors edition then teh 26 minutes are a waste of time. If its the cut, BRING IT ON BABY!!!!

Mmmm, Matrix is coming to VHS in Nov. Also, one thing bugs me about the (not very good in my opinion) DVD....Don Davis talks over cues on the isolated score, making it a real problem in copying to CDR/MD... ArghhhhhDan (UK)

Dan, im almost afraid to ask, but is the only reason you think the DVD isnt very good the fact that Davis talks over the score cues?

Dan
I burned the entire score to CD from the DVD, and only one track did Don talk over the first second of music. The rest of it was totally clean. A couple of tracks he began to talk as the music was almost faided away, but I corrected that with Sound Forge. My completed score is 2 CD's totalling 98:32. Very clean.
So unless you got a different DVD than mine, there should be no problem at all.[This message has been edited by SEBULBA (edited 09-28-99).]

Matt,Oh good god no....Of course I dont think that. No, no. I am unimpressed with the disc because it's simply rushed. Take a look at the specs for the Wild Wild West DVD, it has more one it, LOADS more, and that film is sh*t, made little $$$ and yet the Matrix was great and made millions! Er, HELLO WARNER?
The few featurettes on offer on the DVD all basically show and talk about the same stuff, none of the 3 trailers are on offer (1 is if you have dvd rom, but even then it's mpeg 1 quality)...many of the DVD Rom extras could have been done on standard DVD (storyboards anyone?) and ugh, I can go on. I basically see it as a very, VERY rushed DVD, relesed earlier then it's planned Nov release date to take on Titanic and The Mummy (which it has done and Matrix has shipped about 1.2 million copies).
Also, the commentary track, argh. It's like warner went; "Ok, the directors and key cast are too busy right now doing overseas promo stuff for the movie, lets mash together whoever we can get, yeah?".....again, unimpressed.
THAT's why I aint fond of the disc itself. Nevertheless, you buy a DVD for the movie, and the movie is a great flick, and the transfer on the disc is awesome, which is what matters to me most.

Dan: Yeah, you're right, the Dialogue is kind of annoying.. and this is just a personal opinions.. but I'm not too dissapointed.. cause the cues he talked over weren't my favorites by far. as far as the DVD looking rushed.. I don't think that's really true.. they did a much better job than some do. The only dissapointment I had really was I would've liked to have a commentary track with the Wachowskis, thier track on bound kicked ass. But other than that I'm ok with it. Well, seeing as how I've typed 9 lines, and none of it have to do with film score, I shall change that right now. As for Davis's score.. I loved the hell out of it, and I think Varese did an excellent job chopping the hell out of it.. but.. what are ya gonna do? Davis's commentary did provide a lot of insight on the process of scoring a film though, and I liked that. The only other movie I saw where the composer actually talked about it was Isham's score for Blade, which frankly, I thought was refried sh*t on toast. I really hope to see Davis do some more thematic styles going on, cause he had some great motifs going in the matrix, and, I think a different film would be better for him to bring out the themes, cause with the matrix.. it probably would've ruined it.-Dawk

I have to agree with you... the DVD does feel a bit rushed. The extra features are hidden somewhere in DVD-rom format, the trailer(s) are oddeningly enough in MPEG-1 format, and the commentary track had many moments of 10-minute-long silence in it. It's still a cool film to own just for the visual fun of it... great cinematography and great special effects. The concept of The Matrix seems to be ripped directly from the [1998] film, "Dark City", though. The score is great and it adds so much to the film... yet I don't like it that much when it stands alone on a CD. It becomes irritating and uninteresting when it isn't part into the film, much like the (surprise surprise) "Dark City" soundtrack.

"P.S. What's the music that plays on the menu.. it sounds similar to The Eyes of Truth, but.. it's different."I'm not sure, but it seems to be Warner Brother's cheap attempt to emulate "The Eyes of The Truth" for the DVD. Maybe Enigma didn't want them to use The Eyes of The Truth track in the DVD.

He definately speaks over a bit of one track, near the start as I recall.I dont like that "Eyes of Truth" rip off. thats definately what it seems to be, they even have the same shots used in the trailer (that play in the trailer to the real tune by Enigma) on the menu screen.
