Topic: [College English] - Film Music Assignment... Help me figure this out!

Alright, my college professor has asked me to develop a 10 minute suite of film music to play during class as "inspiration" for a free writing assignment. Here's my dilemma... what combination of music should I choose?I don't want to pick anything that will be too familiar (like Star Wars or Star Trek, Superman - popular themes) but more something that will actually make them think.
I look at this as my opportunity to share our musical interests w/ the class - and what's awesome is that they have to actually sit and reflect on it!
I'm pretty good at mixing music and creating medleys... help me come up with some ideas on what to include. Remember, it can only be 10 minutes or so.
~Jeron
PS- My first thought was "Aftermath" from Deep Blue Sea.

Jeron,
you should include music that is more subtle and slow (the kind that actually relaxes you).
Slow cues of ET are great.
Other titles with slow cues:
Good Will Hunting
Rudy
The River
Black Beauty
Sommersby
Stepmom
Seachring for Bobby Fisher
(Almost anything of Horner's).Hope this helps,
let us know what you decided onScott

Jeron,I think your lucky having that assignment

Though one really...what combination of music...hmmmm....
Well, first of, if you want something that will make them think as inspiration for a free writing assigment, you need to chose something subtle, with a couple of more unnerving cues in between.
My choice would be:
Good Willh Hunting (Main Titles) - 2:40
As Good As It Gets (As Good As It Gets) - 1:20...(this was my inspiration for a essay wich got me an A+)
Psycho (Prelude) - 1:55
The Abyss (Back on the Air) - 1:40
Beetlejuice (Travel Music) - 1:09
Wolf (The Barn) - 1:59
Dolores Claiborne (Sad Room) - :52
I´m not sure wheter or not this will be exactly 10 min. but you can always edit the longer tracks or something.
I hope you use my suggestions, because I think they are GOOD!Have fun!

Thanks guys, so far your suggestions are good. SFT, some of the scores you listed I don't have. I do have some ideas in mind, and the way you are arranging your ideas is helping me with mine. I sure would like more opinions!Keep 'em coming!

Jeron,I'd say use the music that best represents everything that made you love film score at the beginning.
If it were my assignment I'd use the following:
Star Wars (theme only, for time's sake), segue from it's last note before the trumpet and do a five note/chord breakdown to the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Main Title, and after the last timpani hit, immediately break into the Superman theme- and then drive into the next following selections:
Batman Theme
Back To The Future
Independence Day
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
and, for good closure - As Time Goes ByOf course, that's all the familar stuff you don't want to use.
Other selections suggested:
Saving Private Ryan - "Hymn To The Fallen"
The Fifth Element - "Leeloo"
Alien - "Main Title"/Hanson Symphony No. 2
Blade Runner - "End Title"
The Thomas Crown Affair - "Glider pts. 1 & 2"
Merrily-We-Roll-Along (Because cartoons were films once, too. It would only work, though, if you were doing a suite as if it were a classic night at the movies when movies were young)
"Show Me Your Firetruck" - Backdraft
"Kaboom!!!" - The Hunt For Red October
"Main Title/Trinity Infinity" - The music is only unmistakable because it's popular to select people right now.
"Welcome Aboard, Sir!" from Air Force OneYou know, ten minutes isn't enough. You may want to narrow it down to five scores in one genre.

Well...ok. As a writer, I often put on music to write to--so, here's what I suggest--(a list of hopefully mentally stimulating, yet image-neutral suggestions)Leaving Home from "Far and Away"
Main Titles from "The Postman"
The Letter from "A Civil Action"
Darby's Theme from "The Pelican Brief"
Return to Paradise from "Return to Paradise"
Theme from Powder from "Powder"
Leaving Walbrook/On the Road from "Rain Man"
A Different Drum from "Passion"
Elk Hunt from "Last of the Mohicans"
A Very Exhilarating Read from "The Scarlet Letter"Depending on what you're writing, playing 10 minutes of any number of given film scores work...however, the above are representative of some of the more "gasoline for the imagination" type-selections.

Just a few quick suggestions off the top of my head.Either the "Main Theme" or "Raisuli Attacks" from THE WIND AND THE LION,or how about the theme from SILVERADO by Bruce Broughton.A really beautiful piece of music is the main title music from MEMPHIS BELLE by George Fenton.

I only have one track off the top of my head, and that'd be "Ba'Ku Village;" track one on "Star Trek: Insurrection."

I'm kind of fond of the track we used at our wedding. ILIA'S THEME from Star Trek:The Motion Picture. It's a very lyrical piece of music and clues you in that it is Trek only at the very end.

Hey, why not use Train from Peacemaker. That's one piece of music that has to be listen over and over again to realize the complexity of it. It will certainly inspires people to think.
Parts of this cue actually sounds like a moving train. Orchestrationally of course.HD

I will certainly do that. And, if there is any interest at all, I'll encode the suite to real audio or mp3 for everyone to listen to.~Jeron

I said I would try figuring something else out but there has been so many good suggestions that you allready have enough material to work with.
And regarding encoding your suit to RealAudio/mp3...yeah that would be fun.

Hey Scott...Well, actually my professor just asked me to start thinking about it and getting the music together. He hasn't given me a specific date yet. I'll keep you all in suspense as to what I've decided until then.
I hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings.~Jeron
