I was just wondering how many of us have some sort of musical background. I've found those people that do usually have a greater appreciation for scores.

I have played the violin, piano and french horn. And I compose, just for fun. Currently, I'm learning how to play the tin whistle...

I have absolutly no musical background. Sometimes I wish I did. I am a artist\illustrator though and find that movie music is very easy to pick out for moods. If I am painting a very mellow scene I might listen to a very sweeping romantic score. Or if I am Illustrating some sort of action/comic book scene I might pop in The Peacemaker, Enemy of the State, or Star Wars.

I, too, have no musical experience. I might someday pick something up, though.

Well, I'm at this point still a high school senior, but I have been a trombone player since 4th grade, and will complete my second year of music theory/composition this year. I've only composed short class assignments and a 90 second bit I did this summer for fun.

I started taking piano lessons when I was 7. I still play, plus trombone, tuba, and euphonium. And I have a B.A. in music theory and composition. Of course, like most music majors, I've done absolutely squat with that degree, but I'm holding out hope.

    Steve,

Euphonium: yes! It's nice to know there a fellow player out there. Take heart, my brother was a music major and he got a job, so there is hope.

Thanks for the encouragement. And when I do get a job, I'm going to write euphonium parts!

Actually, do you remember that Chevy Chase film "Cops and Robbersons?" It was O.K. Anyway, the ORIGINAL score for that had a euph part, and a friend of my teacher was playing. Let me tell you, this is a pretty cool part. Some solo work in the high registers: cool stuff. Anyway, some loser (probably director) that doesn't know jack about music scrapped that score and had a new one written. Now, who really remembers the music in that film? I mean, one way or another, I doubt the score really impacted the film. So why didn't they just leave well enough alone.

It's probably another musical conspiracy: this time against euphonium players!

Alright, alright. So I went of topic. Sorry.

I'm still in the piano-learning phase. However, I have composed some short pieces of my own. (My latest piece is a measley fugue for flute and acoustic guitar. Though at only two minutes it's not much of a fugue.) However, I have no training in composition, so it would probably take either a genius or a clone of myself to decipher what I've written.

I'm also an avid poet, and film music is a constant inspiration for me.

I have played the piano since I was in second grade (and boy, are my fingers tired!) I have a bachelor's degree in composition and a master's degree in conducting. I actually did work for three years in the music world, so take heart.

(As you can see from my profile, though, I'm currently doing something a bit different.)

I used to take some guitar lessons, and from that I got a general feel for the structure of music, and notes, and chords, and etc.

I also discovered I despise country music.

Currently, I fool around on the old "MODule" software Synthesizer, making wierd Mark-Snow-ish songs and other things.

Yes I also have a musical background. As a child I learnt Cornet, Trombone and played the Baritone in the School Orchestra and I have been playing the piano for 20 years. My current occupation is a private Piano teacher but I am also an aspiring composer with some music projects and recordings in the pipeline including a Choral song for the millenium and a Welsh Song for a Demo CD as well as some commercial pop song demos. I have also played the keyboard for local pantos and appeared on stage in Amateur productions of Musicals. Gae

I played string bass for a few years, but can't really say that I have much musical background. I never even took a music appreciation course. But I do enjoy film scores!

I still blame my parents for not "forcing me" to take piano classes when I was a kid. I never learnt to play an instrument, and consequently never learnt the proper musical language I'm longing for these days. If I had started playing as a kid, I would most certainly have ended up in some sort of musical environment. Instead, I'm studying the next-best thing - media (and film).

However, I've always been very musical, and picked up an amateur piano skill by ear. I've always played (to a better extent) percussion in bands etc. Everytime someone mentions a musical term I don't understand, I turn green of envy...

I miss the clarinet and especially the tenor sax from my high school days. They made us all learn the recorder around 4th grade. Do they still do that?

I've been playing keyboard for several years, but not very good (that piece of crap I've got at home is just too bad to learn to play well). I also have a guitar and want to learn to play it (got new strings for christmas), but I never had the time yet. I still have a bit of musical knowledge from school, but I'm starting to forget the details. Which is sad, I love the theorie. I've composed some small mod and midi files on my computer, nothing special, though I find one of the midi files really good. Sounds a lot like film music. I didn't manage to actually create a theme for it, but it even contains a short fugato sequence.

I hold a music degree, played trumpet for about 13 years, a little piano and tuba, and yes, I even sung in choir.

I have studied composition a little in the past, but want to get more in depth.
whether I get around to it is another thing, however. need more financial resources.
(hey, maybe I can be the next Danny Elfman, just to pee off Andre!)

It's funny, if I had chosen to pursue advanced music education, I would graduating next month with my master's in music theory. oh well.

I play the Clarinet. Been playing that for around 10 years now.

Like all music student (generalisation okay) I started on the Recorder! ARGH!!!!!!

Of course, if I had the talent to to compose music I would do some. It'd be handy for my 3D movies that I do. Instead of relying on music already composed, I could create something myself....

I played piano a little piano when I was little. Can still play a little. Been playing trumpet for about seven years. I am now in my third year while pursuing a music education degree. But I'm from the Seattle area, so I'll probably end up working for Microsoft.

Looking back, I see I have a lot of music in my youth. I studied piano for years, dabbled with viola (the instrument, not Viola from down the street, although -- never mind). Played various percussion instruments, including (mostly) marimba and vibraphone (wrote a small piece for small percussion ensemble, in fact). Still enjoy messing with synth keyboards when I get a chance. Cannot understand how a guitar works, except intellectually.

NP: THE CHAMBER (Carter Burwell) (just found it for cheap) (so far so good) (and 45 minutes long to boot, not bad for Varese)
