I can't remember if this has ever been asked, but what are some of your favorite non-score soundtracks? I know a lot of you express a high disdain for these so called "pop" albums, but I know there are some you like out there. My top five:

    Mallrats
    Clerks
    Pulp Fiction
    Out of Sight
    Stealing Beauty

    NP The Rock ****

Didn't anybody tell you? We're not allowed to discuss non-score soundtracks. It's taboo.

    Just kidding.

Frankly, I don't have many, and the ones I do have were mainly just for one or two songs. "Days of Thunder" and "Full Monty" come to mind. And I also really, really liked "That Thing You Do!" It wasn't score, but it was all original for the film, and it's a lot of fun.

Ahh, Ben read my mind as to the next topic I was thinking about....

Anyway, I have only bought one "soundtrack" to date, and that was Forrest Gump. This soundtrack defined what "songs" SHOULD do for a movie.

But I do believe some of the used CDs (not film music related but I just wanted to bring in light of my bit in Hal's topic about people reactions to film music) that I just recently bought to be just plain awesome and extremely underrated. EXTREMELY underrated.

Donna Lewis "Now In A Minute"
    Seal "Seal" (1994)
New Radicals "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too"
    ANY Bruce Hornsby album
    ANY Phil Collins album

Of all of these, "Now In A Minute" really surprised me the most. She is one of the most unique and entertaining musicians among my short music-listening career.

Like someone had mentioned before, Bruce Hornsby rocks.

Now if only Hollywood directors could get their acts together and produce BOTH a soundtrack and a score to every movie (when you know where freezes over....), to satisfy both the mainstream audience and most importantly, us.

If you can get past that awful Marilyn Manson song, the Matrix is a very awesome techno-rock soundtrack.

TOP GUN is definitely my all-time favorite!! The Matrix is probably second in this category, mainly because I love track 2 by the Propellerheads (get their cd, it's awesome! It has the David Arnold/Propellerheads remix of the "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" theme which is amazing at 9.5 minutes long!) and track 4 by Rob D which is about 100 on my scale of 10. :-)
How good is The Saint's soundtrack? I know it has techno, but how good are the songs? I don't really like The Jackal's techno songs (I'm picky). How about Pi? I've looked at this one a lot, but I keep passing it up.

Ah, Top Gun, the first CD I ever bought. I don't listen to it that much any more, except for the Anthem. I always wondered why "You Lost That Loving Feeling" and "Great Balls of Fire" were never included. I would also like to throw in the ring:

    Reality Bites
    Reservoir Dogs
    The Crow
    True Romance

I'm afraid I have to be the strict one and say that I've never allowed myself to like a song soundtrack from a non-musical movie. However, I'm sure it's all psychological, the same reason my mom won't eat squid even though I tell her time and again how delicious it is. Forrest Gump I suppose I can sort of bring myself to appreciate, but I do think that the songs were overused in the movie. There were quite a few scenes in which I would much rather have heard Silvestri's music rather than a period song.

    James,

You've never watched a movie where there have been a bunch of songs that you like? That's what always gets me. I'm sitting in the theater and a song comes on that I like. Soon, there's another one and another one. BAM! I have to buy that soundtrack. That's why I have a lot of the "pop" album.

    Norman,

Another one of my favorite soundtrack albums is BACKDRAFT, which combines both Hans Zimmer AND Bruce Hornsby. Awesome.

    Michel,

Have you seen "Pi?" If you have, you know how great the music is. It worked SO well in the film. I'm not big into electronica, but I think the reason I liked the music so much was the context of the film.

I'm a big "Pi" fan but have only just recently ordered it. Should get it in a couple of days. I'm hoping it will further enhance my fascination with the movie.

    I don't have many, just:

"Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and well this Frank Sinatra CD, it says "New York, New York" on the cover refering to the movie he sang a song for, but it has lots of "non-New York, New York type Frank Sinatra" songs on it, so I think that counts as a soundtrack...?...

    Cenzo

P.S. Up top for the Grease soundtrack!..

S Smith, I have not seen Pi yet, but I have been interested in it for a while. I've seen the dvd for sale, but I don't want to waste money on a movie that I don't know if I'll like. I watched The Jackal tonight so I *had* to listen to the soundtrack. I like most of the songs on this one, and I bought The Saint's soundtrack today. It sounded pretty good, too. Of course I love The Matrix soundtrack. How would you compare Pi's soundtrack to these other techno soundtracks? I really like Massive Attack's music, and I can't remember exactly which of their songs is on Pi, but I know I like it a lot. You should get Massive Attack's latest cd "Mezzanine." It's excellent. How is the score for Event Horizon (Kamen/Orbital)?

    Michel :-)

Well, I don't really remember "The Matrix" that much, but really, a lot of these techno type scores sometimes sound a lot a like. I could be wrong, being as I'm not really into much techno. All the same, I doubt that the music for "Pi" is much better or worse than any other techno score. But the coolness of the music for "Pi" is the context in which is used in the movie. I think if you see the movie you can better appreciate the music.

I'll warn you though. I wouldn't buy it on DVD or anything until you preview it (rent it or borrow it). It's definitely not a movie for everybody. The reviewer for the times called it "A bizzare and ingeniously paranoid thriller." That's all true, including the bizzare. However, I found it to be much more than that. It's a real intellectual, mess-with-your-head type film. So like I said, if you're interested in it, rent it before you buy it.

Oddly enough that you mention it, Ben, for I just picked up a used copy of Backdraft the same day I bought all those used CDS I mentioned above, and that is why I specifically mentioned Hornsby in the previous post.

"Set In Motion" and "The Show Goes On" are PERFECT complements to another outstanding score from my second favorite composer of all time (almost there, Hans, you should just need a couple more drama scores a la Rain Man and Toys, then you will be tops!). I will not disagree with those who think a lot of his stuff is rehashed, but he somehow still finds a way to make them sound good each time, regardless of the movie. Personally speaking, he is the only one composer that can lift a movie from plain awful into an okay movie.

Anyway, for those who have not heard Backdraft, do yourself a favor and get this short but otherwise spectacular score.

P.S. Does anyone know if there is a soundtrack to "She's All That?" Not the score, but the SOUNDTRACK. I couldn't believe it when Amazon.com didn't even show a listing for it, and before this I could swear that all Gen-X-target movies always tried to make money off sondtracks....Stewart Copeland's five minute gig in the movie was very nice, though.

    Norman,

I read in Entertainment Weekly that there is NOT a "She's All That" soundtrack. Sorry.
