Yes, I saw the film last night and expected a muddled mess of a film, but instead I saw quite an enjoyable action flick. It is definitely a testosterone flick, and with the help of Jerry, an epic one. His score in the film is superb. He helps make the film thrilling and fun.
I was glad to see that the emotional theme from the score album is indeed used as an emotional theme in the film and not as a love theme. It effectively scores the main character and his belief in Allah (or as they also say in the movie thinking no one would catch on, God).
'Valhalia/Viking Victory' contains the best use of Jerry's score in the film. The emotional theme underscores a scene in which Antonio's character, Ibn, prays before battle. Then as the enemy begins to close in, the Vikings begin to pray while standing their ground ready to fight. It is there that the noble music before the huge performance of the Viking theme is. That is truly a great scene thanks to Jerry. You remember the huge performance of the Viking theme in that track? It's not there. There's another piece of music. Starting with just percussion, it builds into a slow and noble performance of the Viking theme. It fits very well.
The movie, just as I thought of the score, is pure testosterone fun. The girls will be looking at their watches. The guys will be watching the gore. Everyone will hear Jerry's score.

I must second that.
I'd been waiting a good year to see this movie, (expecting it out last year, this time.) I found it tons of fun, which was amplified by Goldsmith's powerful music. Even though I caught the final showing and left the theater after midnight, I really had a surge of energy walking out of the theater. Probably a combination of the story and the music--definitely emphasis on the music, though. Really stuck with me--the two go well hand in hand. I recommend this one--at least to the guys out there who liked "Braveheart", and enjoy that chest-pounding, sword-swinging, mine's-bigger- 'n-yours kind of stuff....

I have to agree with you that this was an exceptionally good butt-kicking movie in a summer with a great lacking of those. But, I will have to say that some girls do like it, as I heard quite a few girls at the movie like it as well as the reviewer for Entertainment Weekly, another female. And, yes, the score helped the effect of this movie, and it was the first time I had heard it. Now I just need to get it...

I just got back from seeing the flick.
I hate being the one negative guy in the forum, but I feel strongly that this is definately not one of Goldsmith's best scores. In fact, it was too much like a Goldsmith score. Why? Ever notice that when Goldsmith scores for a movie that requires alot of scenery he uses alot of french horns and bass...here's my examples. In the Main Titles of Medicine Man, when they showed the overhead view of the rainforest being burned, french horns and bass. In Ghost in the Darkness, when they showed the bridge being built, french horns and bass. Well I noticed the exact same thing with alot of the scenery in the 13th Warrior. To be honest its almost predictable. I found myself watching the film looking for a Goldsmith cue, and predicting when I would hear it saying "Ahhh yes. This sounds like a Goldsmith moment." Just about the only thing I've heard by Goldsmith that sounds remotely different is his First Knight score. One of my personal favorites I might add. I'm not a Goldsmith hater, but a little more variety would suit me nicely. Sorry guys. Didn't mean to let you down :-)NP - "First Knight" by you know who.

You haven't let me down, Aaron. I'll take a regular French Horn Goldsmith score any day. Of course, what Goldsmith wrote was exactly what the film needed. Those French Horns pumped a lot of manliness into some of those slower scenes.
Also Robin, I wonder if those girls enjoyed the movie because of Jerry or Antonio? Hmm...
I'm glad to hear that most everybody enjoyed the movie as well as Jerry's music!

I saw the movie last night and i rather enjoyed it. I especially liked the characters. I only had problems with the directing and editing. Did anybody notice during one scene when the warriors were putting a wooden barrier against the door the music suddenly kicked in, then stopped abruptly. I found that to be rather odd and a result of bad editing.
The score was amazing. It was very much like The Mummy.
It was a good movie though. Good, but not great.
Koob out.
