Well I just picked this one up yesterday, but not after some serious debating.I had heard and read nothing but bad reviews leading me to believe that this score was a disappointment. But after hearing some sound clips I decided to risk it and buy it.I figured how bad could it be,i'm an absolute Goldsmith fanatic, and his worst could not be that bad.So I bought the cd and I really enjoyed it.That carousel music is really twisted. The theme that appears in track #3 is has a very nice soft melody that somewhat reminded me of carol anne's theme from POLTERGEIST.Now it's not a very original score, nor one of Goldsmith's best, not in the least. But it is definately alot better than some people will have you believe.I'm really tired of people who dump on Goldsmith, saying things like, all of his scores sound alike or he doesn't come up with anything good anymore.Goldsmith has a very distinctive style, some people like it and others don't.Well I think he comes up with a winner almost every time.He consistantly writes great music for films that truly do not deserve his immense talent,THE HAUNTING being one of those films.Anyway back to the point,THE HAUNTING to me is a real treat, nothing great but an enjoyable score.I have heard the word "boring" used alot in reviews of this score.I don't think it's a boring score,it's a Goldsmith score and if you do not like Goldsmith you won't like the music. But I think most Goldsmith fans will enjoy this score, maybe not on a first listen but give it a chance it might grow on you.

Believe me I would be the last one to dump on Goldsmith, I enjoy so many of his scores, The Haunting just didn't do anything for me though. The Haunting strikes me as a score to be purchased by Goldsmith completists only. I am not sure why I didn't like it, I loved 13th Warrior however, I think that is the Goldsmith score to get this year. I will take your advice though and give The Haunting a chance, I know other scores that I didn't like at first but after multiplte listens they grew on me.

I think the "Carousel" cut is worth the price of admission alone, so to speak. Well, maybe it's not worth $15.00 for one cue, but in my opinion it's the best cut on the CD, and as Matthew said, while score overall is not great, it's still pretty good.

By the way, saw the movie last night. Boy was that kind of lame. Especially the ending.

    Audacity,

I noticed you were listening to NO ESCAPE,and I have been wanting to purchase this cd for a while, but have always had reservations about buying it.The thing that got me atttracted to the score was the end credit music. But apart from that I can never really hear enough of it in the context of the film to honestly judge the score.Plus I have never seen it used or found any sound clips anywhere. So I could never make a decision whether or not it is worth $17.If you could give me a brief review of the soundtrack, that would be great.

There may have only been three Goldsmith-scored movies released in 1999, but the wealth of music Goldsmith composed for ‘The 13th Warrior’, ‘The Haunting’ and ‘The Mummy’, more than compensated for the unusually small number of movies that Goldsmith composed for last year.

‘The Haunting’, though a rather disappointing movie, showcased perfectly Goldsmith’s tremendous compositional talent. Though the score was somewhat reminiscent of earlier Goldsmith works, ‘The Haunting’ saw Goldsmith draw on his immense experience and apply some of those musical devices that have served him so well in the past. The result was a score brimming with inspiration, whilst incorporating the strongest elements of his past work. Thus, Goldsmith created something fresh, but also reminded us of some of his previous successes.

The album opens with ‘The Carousel’, itself a wonderfully quirky calliope piece, with just the right amount of menace bubbling under the surface. Still on the opening track, the fairground music ends and sonorous brass heralds one of Goldsmith’s most beautiful creations. The ‘house’ theme is a successful combination of the ethereal elements of ‘Basic Instinct’ and ‘Star Trek : The Motion Picture’ – and yet it is different. Not better, nor worse, than those earlier classics, just different. It’s mysterious, and yet comfortable, serene, and yet troubled, warm, and yet aloof – these contradictions are the hallmarks of great music.

This ‘house’ theme crops up throughout the album, in various guises, each of which is an absolute pleasure. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of electronic and acoustic ambience to characterize the haunted house, but it’s all fascinating stuff. From the pounding synthesizers to the gentle celeste, Goldsmith creates a rich and interesting soundscape throughout the album. The varied and subtle use of synthesizers is the life-blood of ‘The Haunting’.

A number of tender and warm interludes also appear during the course of the album, each wittily scored for delicate strings, harp and woodwind.

The piece de resistance however, comes with the six minute cue ‘Finally Home’. This track cements the framework of the entire album, and is a stunning display of orchestral might. The music, incorporating the full orchestra, plus electronics, builds to one crescendo after another, and in my opinion is one the best passages of music Goldsmith has written – and he’s written a hell of a lot of great music!

I would recommend ‘The Haunting’ to anyone to who likes music.

I wonder if THE HAUNTING is going to come out again as one of those "expanded" releases. I listened to the album and was none too impressed, but was astonished by much of the music in the film -- that and Eugenio Zanetti's production design were pretty much the only things that kept me in my seat. And it seems to me that a lot of the best stuff isn't on the Varese disc (how could it be, it's another of those short jobbies).

I mention this because I am ever more hesitant to buy these short discs when great big ones come out a year or two (or less) later.

This burgeoning of promos and bootlegs, all openly sold in specialty stores, must be giving the legit companies, and the musicians' unions, no little pause.

I remember saying this at FSM, The Haunting was Goldfsmith best last year. And believe me, I think is quite original, the orchestrations fresh and works fine in the movie.
More strange than this, everybody agreed with me! Unusual!
