Well, I just picked this up. My first impression: Wow. What a great theme... The music is grandeur - it's huge - and definitely original. Like Crichton said (in the liner notes), there's no defined musical style for a Viking-based storyline - so, well - Goldsmith needed to invent one. He also melds an Arab style, so it's AWESOME when the two styles meet.My second impression: It's a companion cd for the Mummy... or probably even vice-versa. I'm listening to it right now, and there are ALOT of similar "Mummy" elements. When you think about it though, this CD should have been released a long time ago - so The Mummy was probably scored after this.
More to come after I finish listening to this incredible masterpeice. Let's give it up for Maestro JG! Woohoo!

Jeron, I think your review says enough. Unlike THE HAUNTING, this score doesn't need explanation, it's just plain fun.
The main theme is rousing and has a special flair to it.. the flair being a large male choir! The action cues are pretty enjoyable, especially the ones with fast French Horn cues ala Basic Instinct chase music. I didn't really care for the retreading of the Mummy love theme or the low brass moanings representing evil.
Put simply. The Viking theme is pure testosterone. A good emotional theme works its way in, with a good performance for the ending of the score (unfortunately, it's not as big and beautiful as the Small Soldiers ending cue), and a short mournful piece which makes it's best apperance in the end. Honestly, if nothing else, it's just a fun score.

I picked it up today. Not without a search though,I had to go to 3 different cd stores before I found it.But I have to say it was worth it.It is really powerful music. In the same vein as "The Mummy".It definately does sound a bit similar at times. In a few parts the music sounds almost identical to "The Mummy".But thats not a bad thing,I love that score. It is a true epic film score with the choir, loud brass and pounding percussion. I'm really impressed so far.I'm not even through with my first listen yet,but at this point i'll give it *****1/2 stars. The best way I can describe the music is that it is big, bold, brassy and beautiful.

Finally a score release with a ten-minute track worthy of being ten minutes long. There's so much good stuff on it! Try listening to the ten minute track from Hook all the way through! It'll put you to sleep.
