I just got back from seeing Jerry Goldsmith at the Hollywood Bowl with a packed house, and I must say it was really good, actually in my opinion it was great. There were some great selections of music.Although I wish that a suite from RUDY had been performed. The fireworks show was wonderful and the new piece of music Goldsmith composed just for the fireworks display was wonderful. It fit perfectly to the fireworks, and the fireworks complimented the music. They even had a sign light up with fireworks that said "happy 70th" with a liking of Jerry's face.Goldsmith told some wonderful stories about each piece of music, some of which were really funny.A great moment happened a the beginning of the concert when Goldsmith came onstage, his baton was missing and he said"Who's got my baton?" And onstage walked none other than a Klingon with Jerry's baton. The Klingon the sat down in the audience with Jerry's father, whom he said was in his 90s.Then Jerry proceeded to conduct a suite from STAR TREK:INSURRECTION. He also conducted a wonderful suite from MULAN and THE MUMMY.Infact right after THE MUMMY suite,Goldsmith told a story and said that the director and some of the cast of THE MUMMY were in the audience,as were alot of celebrities in attendance. My only complaints were that I thought that carol anne's theme from POLTERGEIST and the suite from THE MUMMY needed a choir. It would have added to the affect of the music. Also I felt that the SMALL SOLDIERS and GREMLINS suite needed the synths to make them complete.Although they came off better than I thought they would.Goldsmith played some great pieces from THE WIND AND THE LION,THE RUSSIA HOUSE, PATTON,L.A. CONFIDENTIAL among some other great scores.Overall it was a great night and i'm glad I was there to be a part of it.I hope this becomes a tradition and Goldsmith returns every year from now on like John Williams does.I know that I would be back every year.It was really a treat for Los Angeles, and for a huge Goldsmith fan like myself.

Yeah baby! Just got back from it myself. A great show. What did you think of the "medley" format that was employed a few times? I thought it worked pretty good. It really showed off the scope of JG's work. You wanted to hear "Rudy," I would have liked "The Edge."

He had some great anecdotes and quite a sense of humor, even about his "defeats" at the Oscars. All that did was make me mad at the shoddy way JG is treated by the Academy. He's been robbed at the awards way too many times.

I think you may be a little off though. With the fireworks and the "Happy 70th," I don't think it was his likeness. As odd as it looked, I think it was the U.S.S. Enterprise. But that aside, the new, super-cool world premier firework piece was great. Classic Goldsmith. And it's just for us that live in L.A. Nobody else can have it. Ha!

Your probably right about the "Happy 70th" sign.I only took a quick look at it,I was to into the music and the fireworks themselves, so I didn't pay too close attention. So i'm probably wrong.I only looked once or twice and it looked a little like a face to me,but I wasn't sure.I'm sure I was mistaken. But it sure was a great show.I would also would liked to have heard THE EDGE and some other lesser known scores of Goldsmith's.

On what night did you guys go? I was there for the Friday concert. As for the fireworks show, you could hear The Mummy's influence on it. The basic theme was similar to the hero march for Mummy. Not bad at all, though. Really terrific! It was about the most fun I've ever had!

On Thursday,on the Film Score Monthly website there was a great piece by Jeff Bond reviewing Goldsmith's Hollywood Bowl concerts, and he had some great suggestions on some pieces Goldsmith should perform at his concerts. For example he suggested having a western score medley. There were a number of good points and ideas that I agree with. Not to say I didn't enjoy the show,it was a total blast in my opinion. But There are some newer score of his I would love to hear and some older ones as well. One I would love to hear is the overture from TWILIGHT ZONE:THE MOVIE,a really underrated score I believe. It's a really good article and review of the concerts. And it's worth checking out if you saw one of the performances,to see what one of the critics thought of it.
