Hey,
Is it true that the score is just one key on the piano.--Crono/Kyp

No.. that is absolutely false. I saw Eyes Wide Shut.. and I counted TWO distinct notes on the piano.. sometimes it even changed octaves. I don't know where this one note nonesence came from, but it couldn't be farther from the truth.

No, the piano piece is not the entire score. There are around 5 score tracks (not including the source music, of which the piano bits are a part of). The other score tracks were composed by Jocelyn Pook (?), I believe. I picked up the CD specifically for the "Masked Ball" track which includes some rather "abstract / chanting" vocals over top of some excellent string work - a really cool, provocative and brooding cue. I find it somewhat difficult to listen to the score independant from the movie (although it works very well in the movie), expect for the cue I mentioned.

That particular piano cue isn't score at all, it is a classical piece, which is something Kubrick likes to do- using classical pieces to score moments in his movies.

Kubrick was always crazy about using classical and early 20's music during the climax's of his films (Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, 2001, etc.) It's just another quirk that makes his movies so fun to watch.

Ted,I think you are right when you say that is what makes Kubrick's movies so fun to watch. But, I really think that 2001 would have been a lot better with Alex North's score, instead of old classical music.

A friend of mine thinks that the classical music used in "2001" would work better than the North score, but I'm just peeved at the shoddy treatment Kubrick gave North over that one. What a jerk.
