John Ottman's score to LAKE PLACID is a surprise. Not that it is better than I expected, but that it is different than what I expected.
Instead of a lot of horror cues, the score seems to have a more adventurous feel to it. There is a main theme with writing that is half wilderness adventure and half ominous. It's not memorable, but it's good. Like many wilderness flicks, some of the best cues underscore those landscape scenes.
Highlights include some rather heroic music for the 'let's capture the croc safely' preparation scene, and a good amount of predictable romantic underscore for piano to represent Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda's sexual tension. For a few moments now and then, there is good underscore for the ' this crocodile is a miracle of nature' scenes.
Of course there is horror music. Ottman really doesn't go all out until the climax, which has superb horror writing. The frenzy of strings making their way from one octave to the next reminds me a little of Goldenthal writing.
In the film, the score comes off as fair. On CD, the sound of the orchestra should be even more full, making the use of guitar and Ottman's creativeness more apparent. It should be worth picking up.

A bit about the CD... On John Ottman's official website, he says that a lot of the score was severely edited for the final cut, and that the CD will contain the unedited version of the score.

P.S. For anyone who doesn't know, Ottman's official web site is ottman.filmmusic.com . Check it out! He's directing Urban Legend 2!
