Well what about THE 13th WARRIOR,from what Varese says it is going to be a little over an hour of music.Maybe THE HAUNTING will be a long release as well.We don't know anything for sure yet.Varese might just surprise us with a nice long cd.Let's just hope that we get a lengthy cd,and maybe Varese is going to start changing their ways with cd releases.NP: Wyatt Earp (Howard) (****)

Matthew... where did you get that there were released The 13th Warrior with a *little over* an hour of music? Here's the text from their site:"The 13th Warrior features Jerry Goldsmith in epic adventure mode. A huge symphony orchestra is further enhanced by the forces of a massive choir. An epic score … a grand work … a new masterpiece from the legendary composer. CD features nearly an hour of music!"
I re-emphasize: "CD features nearly an hour of music!"
So maybe a 50-minute release... let's hope for like 59:59... but I doubt it. Seriously, I'm not going to get my hopes up - Varese has let us down so many times, it's still a shame that Hollywood Records or Sony Classical didn't release the score. Perhaps they will surprise us... but don't set yourself up for disappointment.

Don't blame Varese - it's called reuse-fees. We should be glad we have a record label like Varese./Andy

Great news about HAUNTING -- with a little skeptisism. Now what is the 13th WARRIOR? Is that a new movie? And more Goldsmith? Gotta love it!!NP: WITCHES OF EASTWICK: J. Williams (***)

Jeron,I heard a few months back that THE 13th WARRIOR would be about 62 minutes, but that could have changed between then and now.So i'm probably wrong. It is probably under an hour, but lets hope that it's not too much under an hour. For some reason Sony Classical has never released one of Goldsmith's scores. He seems to like for the most part to work with the smaller labels.Plus I read once that Goldsmith doesn't really like long releases,so that might be one reason.Don't blame Varese,I mean have you ever notced that even when one of Goldsmith's scores are on a bigger label such as Epic,Hollywood or Rca, that they are still only 30-40 minute cd's.It's not just the labels fault. So we should be happy with what we get.Maybe he will start realizing that the fans want more music.I doubt it though.[This message has been edited by Matthew (edited 07-05-99).]

I think recently at that Soundtrack auction site that has CDRs, there was a CDR of The 13th Warrior which had 53 minutes of music on it. If the official CD is "nearly an hour long," I think we can assume that it is the same length. Then again, remember what happens when you assume...James

I hope Jerry has written one of his big, beautiful themes for the 13th Warrior. He should have a lot of story to work with.By the way, I noticed 5 *'s for The Postman. Good call!
Anna And The King is coming up late this year and I do believe that JNH is scoring. I am looking forward to that CD with great anticipation.Oh yes, The Haunting Of Hill House. Looks like good special effects from the previews I've seen.

I too hope that Goldsmith's score for "The 13th Warrior" will be good. I was not all that impressed with "The Mummy." I hope Goldsmith takes this film and makes a great score to blend with the very kick ass film (Hey the book was good

(Assuming that the post above was directed toward me) I like "The Mummy" but I think that Goldmsith is getting kind of old. I love his scores, but his past few this year, have not struck me as his older ones.--Crono/Kyp

I still don't have The Mummy yet. I know I will at some point, but haven't been in a big rush. This time last year I was catching up on some older stuff (Rudy, The Russia House, Under Fire, etc.) and playing Mulan and Small Soldiers all the time. Since then I've kinda been on hold.
All I can say (again) is that I really like it when Goldsmith goes totally symphonic and delivers big themes as in First Contact, The Edge, The Ghost And The Darkness, etc. Perhaps The 13th Warrior will deliver a nice blend of the thematic alongside some of the terrific action tracks he writes. We will know soon. I've got a feeling it will be very good.

I'm getting my copy of "The Mummy" tomorrow and I'm tentative about it. I hope its not one of Goldsmith's retro-type scores like "Insurrection" which to me sounded too much like "Rambo" and the synth sounds of "Extreme Prejudice". I prefer Goldsmith when he's in full symphonic mode such as "Star Trek" "Poltergeist" "The Omen scores" etc or his more experimental stuff like "Planet of the Apes" or melodic scores like "Under Fire", "Papillon" "Islands in the Stream". The auction I mentioned is www.cisf.com/auction.cgiThey usually have lots of hard-to-find scores on CDR, and even though I never buy, trade, etc. CDRs, I still go over there once in a while to see what they have. Someone in the biz obviously let the recordings slip into the hands of someone who decided to make it a bootleg before the official release. It's a new movie, although I believe it's been on the shelf for a while... though I could be wrong.

No,James you are correct. It has been on the shelf for almost a year and a half. It's supposed to be that bad.Director John McTiernan was thrown off the project and Michael Crichton came in to try to fix the movie up,and that's when Jerry Goldsmith was brought in to replace Graeme Revell's score.I heard recently that the movie still might go directly to video. But I read a short review of Goldsmith's score in Film Score Monthly a while back, and it is supposed to be very, very good. The way they put it is"The result plays out like a cross between FIRST KNIGHT and a more subdued reading of THE WIND AND THE LION:a nice,big,old-fashioned epic film score".So if it is anything like the way they describe it,I can't wait.NP:Entrapment (Young) (***1/2)

THE 13TH WARRIOR was recorded in London, so Varese could release as much as they would like. Remember Merlin by Jones, 70+ minutes of score. Recorded and performed in London. It's when the music is performed by a US orchestra, it get's so expencive! I can tell you that The 13th Warrior is great, great, great!!! I have a 50+ minutes version on it, and I'm very much looking forward to the original Varese release. The score does sound a bit like The Mummy, but with new supurb themes, and a giant male choir!
And I think Varese Sarabande are great, even if they often release 30 minutes albums. Just think about if they wasn't there. No Rudy, Medicine Man, Cocoon the returns, Conan the babarian etc.
I was told that a 60 min. release has a price of $70,000 and a 30 min. release $40,000. If it is performed by a US orchestra.
I would love to get James Horner's score for HOUSE OF CARDS released, but the price would then be very high! Because there is just over an hour of beautiful score in the film.
