I thought it was a good score. A great theme, and as a whole the score was VERY thematic. I would see the movie before you get the score though.

Id give it ***1/2 out of ***** (Average, but good)

I just got back from seeing the movie, and IMO, it was a really good, rousing score.

Too bad the movie wasn't as rousing.

The score is a little similar to the film. It's okay on the outside, but it's actually pretty hollow. Sure, it sounds great, but upon listening closely you'll find a really fun theme and not much else. I must say that this is the most entertaining Bernstein score in a long time. There is some energetic writing here and there, but the best part is the over-the-top theme. The CD is worth having at least for the 70s sounding main titles music. I'll be getting it when it comes out... that and The Haunting of course.

I was a little disappointed the old theme only showed up once. Anybody recognize the town Loveless attacks?

I was blown away by the opening title cue. Almost literally. Fantastic. The rest of the score I think is O.K. Not great, but not bad. The thing about the original theme is I knew it was coming, but didn't realize where it was used until it was about half over. Good use of it though. And if you listen to the main theme, you can hear elements of the original in it.

Al, as far as the energy goes, I agree. I think Bernstein is probably best in his element at western. With "Magnificent Seven," I'd say Bernstein is the king of western score. Of course, that's just my opinion.

As far as the movie goes, I thought it was pretty fun. Had some funny lines, some good effects. Of course it wasn't substantive, but anybody that expected it to be is probably supremely naive. I had fun, and that's all there is to that.

P.S. I don't see HOW they can make a whole "song album" out of, what, two songs during the end credits. Truly ridiculous.

I finally saw the movie and wasn't too impressed with it. It had it's moments (seeing Salma Hayek's butt being the best ), but it was pretty much what I expected. It tried way too hard to be funny and not enough time was spent being serious. Of course a good script wouldn't hurt. A giant mechanical tarantula? Give me a break.

Anyway, as far as the score goes, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping the original theme would be used more in the score like Elman did with Mission Impossible, but it wasn't. I did hear elements of it in the opening titles, but every time I did, it just made me expect to hear a full break out of the original. And when then didn't happen, I went back to being disappointed. It was a pretty good action score (at least the parts that I could hear that weren't drowned out by sound effects), but it just seemed a little out of place. The movie was set in 1869, but the music sounded if it came from the 70's. I thought the opening titles were more appropriate for the theme to Baretta than for a western. But still, the action cues were lively and I did enjoy the music (that I could hear). The main title music was probably the best piece in the movie with the music during the cornfield chase being the next best. Overall I give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

Hmm. I don't know. You might want to find a thread on the message board which contains some people's opinions on the score, maybe even with some of those star ratings.

    Oh...

    wait.

well, I haven't seen the movie, but I do have the Main Title on the Varese Great Compsers CD that features works by Bernstein.

It's typical Bernstein theme for a western, exuberant, happy, etc. About half way through it changes gears in to something electronic.

that's about all I can account for about this score. sorry

I really enjoyed this score. It was one of the best scores released last year and light years beyond the film itself. I just wish there was more of it..Ah well.

Yeah too bad it is short, but I really think most of the score is represented on the cd with the exception of the sequence with the original Wild Wild West theme and some of the end battle I believe. Funny, I hated this movie when I first saw it. But due to events in my life at the time I saw it, the score is one of those those that has special memories for me. Of all the scores...... Gees.

Scott, Mark, Peter K. where are you guys? Somebody tell me I am not having a severe senior moment.

If you've noticed, TimT sometimes gets a little bored and goes wandering through the past (looong past in some cases) and responds to things as if the present was the past, with the privilege of "knowing the future."

If this doesn't make sense, cue the TZ theme music...
