Iron Giant = Best Animated flick ever.
While the score isn't the most memorable animated one ever, it has its moments. The problem, like everybody knows, is the fact that it really lacks a main theme. But it fits the movie so good, who cares? The track titled "No Following" is one of the best tracks I've ever heard, the definate highlight of the album, and I have tears in my eyes every time I watch that scene. I'd say about 98% of the people I know in this world haven't seen the movie. If you haven't, see it... I have yet to meet somebody who didn't think it was fantastic.

Who the heck started this lame idea that Iron Giant has no main theme, and why do people continue to believe it? Hasta, do you own this score? If you have, have you listened to it?

If people would just watch the film and LISTEN to the score, by God, you will find NOT ONLY is there a strong theme for the giant, there is a SECOND theme for the boy. What makes this score great is the interaction of these two themes throughout the movie!!

What are people listening to when they hear this? No theme? Whatever. Perhaps they've "heard" it doesn't have a main theme from some "review" site and are just passing on the word?

All it takes is a listen.

Hasta, The Iron Giant DOES HAVE A MAIN THEME!! It's all over the CD!
I have this interview with Michael Kamen in MP3, he said for you people who say there is no main theme in Iron Giant "You Need To Get Your Ears Checked." And he's right the theme is in almost every track. In the first track the first thing that you hear is the main theme!
Check out the CD review at Movie Wave.

OK, I'm sorry... I should have said STRONG theme, rather than main theme. It is simply the fact that after listening to the whole score, I never find myself humming a theme from it... Usually that doesn't happen with scores, but this one, it does. People agree with me, too. It's all about opinion though, I guess.

Well I haven't played the score in a while, but even now I can still hum the main theme.
Now PeterK said theres a secondary theme, this I didn't catch!

There is a flute motif for the boy, I believe. Very similar to an idea used in the beginning of Kamen's "From The Earth To The Moon" theme.

And yes, the theme is very hummable. I think that, because there are SO many variations, it has moments where it is a strong theme and other moments where it isn't. It's not a Goldsmithian theme where its statements are straightforward, but it still has moments where the theme is a strong one.
