I love these two scores! I never really fully apreciated either until I sat and watch both movies for the second and third times ages ago, and I tend to spend my moohlaa on new score releases, but nothing new lately took my fancy, so thought I'd grab these ones I've wanted for a while.I recall the thread here about videogame music, listening to Speed as I am right now I am reminded a lot of Metal Gear Solid, anyone thing Mancinas work was an inspiration to that game score?
Whats everyones opinions on the two scores overall anyways? Thanks folks...

Lately, I've been very much enjoying Thomas Newman's Meet Joe Black and The Horse Whisperer. I can't remember Shawshank's score, but I loved the movie. Should I get the cd??NP: Meet Joe Black

Well...I don't know anything about the Shawshank Redemption, although I'm hearing so many great things about it I should probably rent the movie and hear it.As for Speed, I always hate to be the one who hates things, but this is one of my least favorite scores. The only track I can honestly say I enjoyed was the final one, since it presented the main theme in the way which I was hoping for throughout the score. As for the rest of the score, I just can't seem to bring myself to enjoy the way the Mancina uses the electronics in the action cues, and although I wil admit that they are thrilling pieces of music, it's not the entertaining kind of thrill I was hoping for. It seems more like music created by a machine, and I just don't enjoy it. I really am sorry to give it such a poor review, but I probably hate it for all the same reasons you love it.

The thing that bugged me about the Shawshank track was that it was 90% gloomy/morbid, till the last couple of tracks. A lot of the tracks were basically repeats of previous ones. This was one movie in which I preferred to listen to the scores while watching the movie as opposed to listening to it on its own.

Argggggh. Watched the movie of Shawshank Redemption last night. The score release has missing cues, good ones too, a nice theme is not on the CD. DANG!Dan (UK)

I picked up Speed used a while back, partly because I heard it was good music, and partly because its quite hard to find, so I took the opportunity. I have to say, I agree with James on this one. Too much electronic stuff, to little REAL instruments. When some real orchestra does come in, it just sounds dull and not powerful in the least.
As for Shawshank, I cant say much more than its one of my favorite scores of all time. I love it
