As I had a day off work I went on a film music trek and ended up spending a bit more than I meant...whats new? Anyway I bought the following CDs/Cassettes(some of them at bargain prices). Apart from "Empire" does anyone have any comments about these scores as I dont know most of them yet. Thanks for any info!
The Empire Strikes Back (2CD Special Edition)
Addams Family Values (Marc Shaiman)
Stargate (David Arnold)
Cliffanger(Trevor Jones).. picked it up for £3.50!!!
Dracula(Wojciech Kilar)....also £3.50!!
The X Files (Motion Picture Score...Mark Snow)
Zulu(John Barry)...Double CD with other themes and
conducted by Nic Raine
Any info much appreciated! Gae NP "Empire...."

Well, I'll comment on the ones I have or have heard, and leave the rest alone..Stargate: I hadn't gotten this one for a while (in fact hadn't seen the film in the theaters), but I was surprised on what a wonderful job he did. Sometimes melodic, sometimes militaristic, sometimes romantic, but never boring.
Also, if you can find it is the score to the TV series Stargate SG-1. Some of his music is on it, but also some new compositions by Joel Goldsmith.
Dracula: Where as the music fit wonderfully in the film, I don't really like it outside of the cinema. Let's just say I'm glad I was able to listen to it before buying it.

I own the X-Files motion picture soundtrack... It's good, but it's not memorable. Mark Snow, who usually uses dark synthesizers in the TV show (which works out great), takes a more orchestral approach in the movie soundtrack. I don't like it as much as the sythesizer style he uses in the TV show, though. If your a big fan of the show and you love the soundtrack, go ahead and buy it... I wasn't to thrilled by the CD. I recommend you buy "The Truth and The Light" instead, which is Mark Snow's TV-show X-Files soundtrack. There's my short, short review.

Stargate has become one of my favorite soundtracks. Its the pick of your group in my humble opinion.

I agree with Jack that STARGATE is the best one out of the group, besides EMPIRE... of course. Arnold does such an awesome job on this score, combining Sci-Fi themes with "Indiana Jones" sounding themes. The Stargate Overture is one of my favorite themes of all time. The Choral work in this score is some of the best I have heard in a film score. This is music that fits the movie absolutely perfectly and is great to listen to outside the film.CLIFFHANGER is a pretty good score from Trevor Jones, it has a very memorable main theme that appears a couple of times throughout. Track 7 is a very good cue for being only just over a minute long. Track 9 is an awesome track also. It starts slow and then gradually builds up into a great action theme then slows down again to reprise the main theme. Listen to this score closely, to me it sounds like it belongs in a fantasy movie, but that is just Jones' style I guess. (The tracks on the disk do not match up with the track listings written on the disk. Anyone know what the true track listings are?)
DRACULA is without a doubt the best "dark" score that I own. Kilar does a good job creating a scary yet thematically powerful score. There are a lot of composers that can make a good scary sounding score. But they usually do this with creepy noises thrown in here or there, that don't work that good outside of the movie. Kilar creates entire themes and motifs that are horrific to listen to in or out of the movie. Great score. What else has Kilar done?

Thanks for your replies Guys.I've been listening to these scores over the last couple of days and I love Stargate, Dracula and Cliffhanger. David Arnold is starting to become one of my favourite "newer" composer...that guy is so talented and he's only about 38. He's definately the next Barry for us Brits. Trevor Jones(another Brit) has also written an exciting score with a memorable central theme and the "Dracula" sounds so much better than how I remember it in the movie ( I was'nt that keen on the movie as I prefer my Dracula with blood dripping fangs alla Chris Lee). Kevin, I think you should have another listen to "Dracula" as its full of atmospere, some nice choral/creepy music and a lovely "Love Theme"...mind you its easy to feel inspired viewing Winona Ryder on the screen!!!
