At the 2000 Grammy's there will be three new categories:
Best Song for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and Best Instrumental Composition for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, and Best Soundtrack Album for Film, Television, or Other Visual Media.

This means that game music, which falls under the 'other visual media', will not only get grammy recognition, but will also be treated equally with film scores. This move, I hope, will lead to bigger and better game soundtrack albums and scores, as well as encourage composers to get invovled in this up and coming aspect of music.

Speaking of gaming music, the new Star Wars Episode 1 Racer game, which is one of the best racing games I've played in a while, contains new music not found on the soundtrack. Imagine racing at 600mph with John Williams music playing the background!!

What are the original categories left for the Oscars? Best Original Score?

And these three new categories seem to me another way to bring in mainstream into soundtrack scores, but in a way, it's actually wiping the "scores" out of recognition.

What do the rest of you think?

P.S. Would Best Intrumental Composition be something like Jan Hammer's theme for Miami Vice, where it's not a score, but just instrumental music?

Let's hope Bruce Broughton's score for Heart of Darkness will be nominated!
