I was curious if there were any books out there that all you fine folks have read that you think would warrent a score. I love the Shadows of the Empire score and thought that it was a wonderful idea.

    My votes would be for:
    Dragonlance Chronicles(Williams or Horner)
The Watershed Trilogy by Douglas Niles(Goldsmith or Goldenthal)
The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King(Zimmer or Glass)

    NP Phantom Menace

Hmm...do you mean, if we have read a book where a good score could be composed, had it been made into a movie?
Well, in that case I think "Lille Lucifer" (a danish book, none of you know it) could be a great movie. And Danny Elfman would be the perfect one to score it.
I wonīt bore you with what itīs about, since itīs 845 pages long...

I think Tom Clancy's "Rainbow Six" would rate a cool action score. If I had to get a composer, I'd pick Hans Zimmer, seeing how he's scored all those Bruckheimer films.

If you think about, any book could rate a score. It's just getting the right composer.

Speaking of Rainbow Six, the GAME had a TERRIFIC score on it but I failed to catch the composers name. But he did a hell of a job bringing the Hollywood score feel to the Rainbow Six game.

In my opinion, being a long time Science Fiction reader and a blossoming Sci-Fi writer, I think the greatest Sci-Fi story ever is Philip Jose Farmer's RIVERWORLD series. It is a series of five books:

    TO YOUR SCATTERED BODIES GO
    THE FABULOUS RIVERBOAT
    THE DARK DESIGN
    THE MAGIC LABYRINTH
    THE GODS OF RIVERWORLD

I have read this series three times and every time I read one of these books I think that there could be an awesome score written for them. The story is about everyone who ever lived on Earth being reincarnated onto the banks of a million-mile river. That is every culture that has ever existed all of a sudden living side by side, the score could include any type of music ever thought of. That would be a pretty hard test for any composer.

I once read something online about a guy named Stefan Picq coming out with a CD of music he wrote for a computer game based on the RIVERWORLD saga. But I have not seen a game or CD. Anyone ever heard anything about this?

    LUCIFER'S HAMMER
I forget the authors, but it's a book (written in 1975 I think) about a comet that crashes into the earth. Sound familiar? Since I thought Deep Impact (the movie and the score) was too unoriginal and didn't try hard enough, and Armageddon (the movie and the score) was too unorginal and unintelligent (excluding most of Harry G-W's parts), this one would warrant a great a score, and a phenomenal movie; but now wouldn't be the right time, after two movies (three if you count Asteroid) about the subject in the same year.

NP - The Last of the Mohicans

PS - I don't want any angry e-mails, so let me say that I think Deep Impact and Armageddon were both good scores; I own both of them, in fact. There just not two of my favorites, that's all.

A few years ago some guy went and composed and symphony for concert band based on J.R.R. Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings" series. It's quite good.

Hey S Smith that sounds really great. Do you remember the composers name?

Sure Dave. The composer's name is Johan de Meij or you may see it spelled de Mey (he's Dutch), and is called "Symphony #1 'Lord of the Rings.'" I think there were two recordings. The one I have is by the Dutch Royal Military Band and released by Ottavo. I think I bought this at Tower Records, although I've seen it at CDNOW and AMAZON (CDNOW was cheaper).

If you get it, I hope you enjoy it (The "Gandalf" and "Hobbit" movements are the best).

I'd like to see a score inspired by "This Present Darkness" by Frank E. Peretti.

I envision this with a massive choir, perhaps singing Latin or other foreign phrases, much like Duel of the Fates, with the climax of the battle between the angels and the demons set to the song, "Allelujiah, Amen".

Being a big comic book reader, I have often turned on my stereo when I read great comics such as Kingdom Come from DC Comics and Marvels from Marvel Comics. I know exactly how some of you feel. I put Orbital's Halycon+On+On from Mortal Kombat's soundtrack on repeat and spent three hours reading while listening to that great track (which to this date I still listen to) which I think if they ever made a movie out of the story, then Orbital should be brought in to score the film. I agree with the notion that it probably isn't the book that warrants a soundtrack, but rather that the movie that COULD BE made based from the book.

Can't leave this one out....Fist of the North Star, a Japanese manga comic book series that deserves to use Mancina's Con Air as its official soundtrack. I simply CAN'T read the series without listening to the ear-scorching sounds of Con Air's villains while playing the soothing Trisha themes.

Norman-Aha! I was wondering if you took that name from "Kingdom Come". That series and "Marvels" would rate a good soundtrack if made into a movie. I think those series would need a very sweeping score set with it, by someone like Horner or Goldsmith.

Ben, I was thinking more of the new age type of music (Enya, Orbital, Enigma among the most popular ones). This would make more sense than classic orchestral scores with the likes of Horner or Goldsmith because of its setting....taking place in the future and all. I really do recommend listening to Halycon+On+On by Orbital for Kingdom Come. It brings out everything that the comic book was meant to be, and more.

Norman-I'll have to give it a try. What about Marvels? More New Age Music?

A general question: do you guys ever try to read the book while listening the its corresponding movie score i.e. Jurrasic Park or Clear and Present Danger? Does it fit your vision?

As for Marvels, I honestly have to admit, the first time I read it, I thought it was terrific all by itself. Then I started to use Halycon+On+On for it also. So in a way, I was swayed by Orbital's impact on Kingdom Come to use that song for Marvels....

As for other songs, I recommend the "Paint the Sky with Stars" album by Enya, particularly tracks 3 through 5 for both Kingdom Come and Marvels.

Note: The beginning in Kingdom Come, where Norman is reading to the dying Wesley Dodds, we see what goes on outside the window. This scene matched with Halycon+On+On when the intro starts to pick up the pace by the beat. At that moment, I realized that song was the perfect complement to the book. Also, when Batman led his troops into Armageddon, their sudden appearance matched perfectly with the song near the end when the choral part stops and begins to fade with the instrumentals.....

I'd like to see Mark Snow do a score based on the book, "Ender's Game".

I'd like to see him use the drowsy, dreamy, mysterious, dark style he uses in the X-Files tv show.

I also would have mentioned the book, "SPHERE", should make a good movie score, but that's been done (and done nicely) by Elliot Goldenthal. Unfortunately, the movie itself turned out to be somewhat shallow and disappointing.

    Ben:

I've tried that, it generally doesn't work. because book s and movies differ so much, and when I read Jurassic Park, and saw the movie, I loved them both, but I loved them both cause they were both unique, similar.. but yet very different. What I HAVE done though, and I do this to a lot of books, is I score my own soundtrack for them. I have a very good time doing it.
