    Hey all,
Does anyone here like video game soundtracks? One of my favorites is "Myst" and "Final Fantasy VII" I think that the creaters should put the soundtracks with the games. What do you all think?

I think alot of people wouldn't listen to the music. Personally, I love game soundtracks. Just got Final Fantasy 8 (Ltd. Edition) two days ago!! It's awesome.

Game soundtracks rule, some of them are better than soundtracks to film. Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and Metal Gear Solid are my favorites, but there are many others. My dream is that someday both film music converge, with movie composers doing music in CD-quality for games, and the better game composers doing movies.

I too, enjoy game soundtracks. HEART OF DARKNESS by Bruce Broughton was a great score. Another one I liked was Resident Evil (aka Biohazard).

Some games already released their soundtrack on a seperate CD. Games like Command & Conquer, C&C:Red Alert, Quest For Glory V, Unreal and many more. Most have their music in CD Audio on the game disc itself so you can pop the game disc into a CD player and listen to the tracks.

I have a couple different game soundtracks that I listen to all the time. My favorites are Shattered Steel, Microsoft Hellbender and Microsoft Deadly Tide, these all contain the music on the actual game disk. Deadly Tide and Shattered Steel sound like they could be scores from movies while Hellbender has great Techno style music on it. Games are kinda expensive to buy just for the music but if you can find these older games on clearance or used I highly recommend picking them up for the great music on them. I recently saw Deadly Tide, a four CD game, for sale at a used store for $9.99 if anyone is interested.

Myst, Riven and The Dig are awesome game soundtracks that are sold seperately from the game. And I recently got the soundtrack to The Lost World for the Playstation, excellent music.

I have (and LOVE), four-disc soundtracks for Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8. Also, Metal Gear Solid has a lot of Zimmer-like cues.

The songs from the "Mechwarrior 2" games ("Mechwarrior 2", "Mercenaries", and "Ghost Bear's Legacy", and "Heavy Gear" which is from the same composer) are very stylish and moody, and really fit the style of the game. It was from a japanese composer... I don't remember the name though. All the music is in Redbook "CD-Audio" format included in the CD-Roms of the game, so it can be played in any CD player (as long as you skip track one, the "Data track").

Michael Land's "The Dig" soundtrack is great. The music in "The Dig" reminds me of the "Gattaca" soundtrack a little bit.

Straylight Productions did some very cool music for the game, "Unreal". All the songs can be "ripped" directly from the game into their "MOD" formats, or can be bought on an audio CD. Straylight Productions does most of the Epic Megagames games, and did the music to Origin's "Crusader: No Remorse" games.

Is it still possible to find the soundtracks to Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8 and Metal Gear Solid? I have looked for these everywhere and haven't ever seen any of them. Were they ever for sale at normal music stores or can they be ordered off of the web?

The composer for MechWarrior series games is Jeehun Hwang. He's basically the main composer for Activision. He did the music for all the MechWarrior and Heavy Gear plus Dark Reign. Anybody knows if he has a homepage?

    Ted,

Thanks for the info, I am going to order Metal Gear Solid and one of the Final Fantasy sets. I have a question for anyone though, which music is better Final Fantasy 7 or 8? Are they both 4 CD sets?

Audacity, I've heard all of ff7 and most of ff8, I have yet to own ff8 soundtrack, but from what I've heard from ff8, it is a much better score with better sound quality and a whole lot more themes that just sound better.

I forgot to mention the soundtrack to "Shadows of the Empire" (the Nintendo 64 game). The intresting thing is, the soundtrack (by Joel McNeely) was released some years before the game was ever released. The game took some little clips off Joel McNeely's CD and used them in the game

Ecco the Dolphin. Ecco: The Tides of Time. Both games on Sega CD. These two games had the most incredible game soundtracks I have ever heard, and believe I ever will hear. The music was composed by Spencer Nilsen, who, in my opinion, never wrote a single note of good music outside of these two games. But these soundtracks were incredibly outstanding. The games had isolated music tracks on them, and I'd listen to them a lot. Then I found out that there was an official soundtrack released in '96. It is entitled "Ecco: Songs of Time" and it has better sound quality than the game tracks did, although not all of the music was released. The music isn't orchestral, which usually bugs me a lot, but in this case I think it is so brilliant that it doesn't matter. I especially recommend this CD to anyone who thinks they might enjoy instrumental Enya music with added percussion. But that really doesn't describe it adequately. But I really loved this CD, and that's what counts. If you buy it and like what you hear, then I recommend picking up the video game Ecco the Dolphin if you can find it at a low price, because that's where most of the unreleased music is. But the CD is still outstandingly excellent.

Tom Clancy´s Rainbow Six has got some very Zimmerish music on it. Reminds me alot of The Rock. And the best thing is that the music can be heard straight from the cd. I´ve heard that the same guy has made music to many other games as well. Tresspasser (Jurassic Park) is supposed to be quite good one.

I enjoyed the Dig. Some of it seemed a little too atmospheric, but I understand how it is used in the game. The first track is great. The theme reminds me of some bits and pieces of Jesus Of Nazareth.
I've heard clips of Lost World and FF VII and I was quite impressed. For video game music, they are real achievements. It's good to see the makers using orchestral scores. I played a demo of Heart Of Darkness to hear Broughton's score and I was impressed at how a full orchestra can make the game so much more involving. Of course, there's no telling how many times I fell in a hole and had to hear those falling strings... fellas, it's been a long time since i've played a game.. but it is good to see an extremely talented composer write something for computer. Now I hear Mark Snow is signed on to do one.

Ok this isn't an N64/PSX game, its a PC game. One I don't even have yet. I'm only going on the demo I've played, but Grim Fandango has some nice music in it. On the demo it's mostly Latin lounge type music, but it's really good.

    I forgot to mention...

The movie cutscenes (the best I've ever seen in a game) of a game called "Privateer 2" had some great, great, moody, atmospheric music to it. From dark songs like the opening scene where the ship crashes, or the lighter orchestra songs like the opening credits music, it's very cool music.

Also, "Chrono Trigger". Exceptionally good considering it came from a Super Nintendo MOD synthesizer.

Sebula - I LOVED the Alien Vs. Predator score. One of the greatest PC games ever made also has one of the greatest scores ever made

Also, some of the older Sierra Quest games like King's Quest, Police Quest, Lesiure Suite Larry, Space Quest...great midi stuff. And you can't beat the famous Russian tunes on Tetris!

For N64...Gauntlet Legends is one of my favorites...especialy the techno remix during the finale. Its an alternate version of the original Gauntlet theme from the Gauntlet II arcade. Though A little annoying at times, Zelda has some great stuff. And the Mario 64 music is quite nice too...especially the interior castle music. RUSH Extreme Racing USA has some nice bass...I could go on and on with N64.

The Shadows of the Empire score was composed for the book not the game. They just used it in the game which was based on the book itself.

The Lost World is an awsome game score.

Yes, also another good score, and yes it (Shadows) was composed for the book. A cool idea in my opinion. Think of all the great scores that could be written based on books, which have never seen the silver screen. And I totally agree with Aaron, Aliens vs. Predator, not just a great score, but one of the best PC games ever. If you've never seen or played it, you've GOT TO!

I am a great fan of game soundtracks, I love them just as much as I do movie and TV scores. But I mostly own soundtracks from Nintendo games.
My favourites (which are all Japanese CDs) include:

    1. Ganbare Goemon 5 OST (or as some of you might know it as, Mystical Ninja starring Goemon), Ganbare Goemon 6 oST (Goemon's Great Adventure) - both these CDs have really upbeat groovin' music.
2.The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Symphony - some music from Zelda 64 done very classical-like with a real symphony, but catchy and fun, mostly done with strings.
3.Legend of Zelda: Sound and Drama - some music from Zelda Link to the Past arranged kinda classical, but more adventerous than the Hyrule Symphony CD.
4.Sonic Aventure OST- great music, very upbeat techno/rock type music, upbeat like the Goemon CDs, except better quality.

    Cenzo

P.S. Even though I didn't mention it above, Super Metroid: Sound in Action CD is also a favourite of mine.

Metal Gear Solid is good?! I don't know, I have the free version which came when you pre-ordered the game and it's average at best. The last two tracks are the best. But is there more music on the Japanese release? You'd think there would be.

For good game music try ELEMENTAL GEARBOLT for the psx and OUTLAND for the pc. Both have full orchestra's.

I think this is the fifth time I'm replying to this post, hehe

The music of the games Descent 1 & 2 had great MIDI music. Descent 2 also came with another (non-MIDI) CD soundtrack, composed by Nivek Ogre of "Skinny Puppy", and a little bit from "Type O Negative". ...Very frightening, very intense bizzare synthesizer tracks, perfect for the atmosphere of the game.

After reading the guide to the complete Phantom Menace CD in the recent FSM issue, I decided to check out the tool "SCUMM Revisited" they mentioned.

That thing is capable of ripping the music from LucasArts adventures! It'll get you every single note from The Curse of Monkey Island (although the cutscene score has dialogue), and the underscore (minus the cutscene music) from Grim Fandango. I'm just working on my custom Grim Fandango score CDs - there's so much music, it looks like it'll be enough for a 3 CD set.
