Well, IMO, I didn't care too much for that score. For some reason it bothered me, and I just can't put my finger on it.As to Doyle's scores in general, I think they're great. I would recommend them to anyone. In fact, before I posted this, I put Henry V in my ROM drive.
Definately give his music a try.

Kevin took the words right out of my mouth. I also did not care for Great Expectations all that much-just something about it. On the other hand, I really like some of Doyle's other works. Henry V and Sense and Sensibility are two of my favorites. I think the track entitled "The Battle of Agincourt" from Henry V is absolutely beautiful. Definately check it out.posted 04-13-1999 12:41 PM PT (US)

Great Expectations was one of the best scores released in 1998, and its a shame that it hasnt reciveved the attention it deserved. Its a beautiful score, with a wonderful theme, highlighted in "Kissing in the Rain", a track which alone justifies the cost of the cd.Doyle's work tend to be consistently solid, I also recommend Sense and Sensisbility.
(also if your into pop soundtracks, the soundtrack to the
is equally as good.)NP- Great Expectation's (Doyle)- the cd rarely leaves my cd player

Doyle has a great gift for melodies. The main theme of Great Expectations ist quiet good and it's a solid score but if you're new to Doyle's work try his wonderful music for "A Little Princess" of "Much Ado About Nothing".

Doyle has been one of my favorite composers since 1991 (Dead Again) and his out put never seizes to amaze me. Some of his works tend to be a little worse than the best notably Hamlet which just doesn`t work, but for beautiful Doyle try Little Princess or Great Expectations (both 5 star score) or for bombastic try Frankenstein or Dead Again (both unsurprisinlgy 5 star)or for a mixture Carlito`s way (4 star)
THe only Doyle score I don`t have are Shipwrecked and Into the West.If anyone can give info on where to find them, would appreciate it.

Another good Patrick Doyle score is the one for the film
Sense and Sensibility.

I wish Doyle will become more active in his scoring career. I am always excited about the news of a new Doyle score.Have any of you picked up Henry V? His first, and still, in many ways, his best major film score.
I should get some audio clips up there.

Here a list of Doyle's scores (I think he ahs two coming out in the next few months):1. Love's Labour's Lost (2000) (Great score, CD has stars singing, orchestrations are good)
2. Est-Ouest (1999) (Oscar worthy--get this)
3. Quest for Camelot (1998) (not much score on the CD)
4. Great Expectations (1998) (OK)
5. Donnie Brasco (1997) (haven't seen--but I read somewhere the DVD has isolated score)
6. Hamlet (1996) (Excellent!)
7. Mrs. Winterbourne (1996) (Nice, gets positive comments when I play this in the office.)
8. Sense and Sensibility (1995) (Excellent)
9. Little Princess, A (1995) (Good score, Indian flavored)
10. Une femme française (1995) (Haven't seen or heard)
11. Frankenstein (1994) (Good)
12. Exit to Eden (1994) (About the only good thing that came out of this film, which is not saying much)
13. Much Ado About Nothing (1993) (Excellent)
14. Carlito's Way (1993) (Interesting attempt at an action score...not the best CD representation)
15. Needful Things (1993) (OK)
16. Indochine (1992) (This is a good score, but takes time to appreciate.)
17. Into the West (1992) (Haven't seen/heard)
18. Dead Again (1991) (Great score--underrepresented on the CD)
19 Håkon Håkonsen (1990) / aka Shipwrecked (1990) (never seen/heard)
20. Henry V (1989) (Essential to film score library)If I had to pick 5 starters (i.e., Doyle scores I actually play frequently) it would be:
Henry V; Much Ado About Nothing; Est-Ouest; Sense & Sensibility; and Hamlet or Indochine.posted 03-07-2001 07:47 AM PT (US)

Well, considering that was way back before I had even graduated high school... GEESH. Here's my Doyle collection now, a full 2 or so years later:Dead Again
Donnie Brasco
East-West (Est-Quest)
Exit to Eden
Frankenstein
Great Expectations
Indochine
Little Princess, A
Mrs. Winterbourne
Needful ThingsI'm a dedicated Doyle fan if there ever was one... just need to pick up Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, Hamlet, Sense and Sensibility, and Carlito's Way.

LOL, Jeron, my Doyle collection has most of the stuff yours hasn't.
- Henry V
- Dead Again
- Needful Things
- Carlito's Way
- Much Ado About Nothing
- Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
- Hamlet
- Donnie Brasco
Still too small. But Jeron, you are NO dedicated Doyle fan unless you own Much Ado About Nothing. Promise me this is the next CD you're gonna buy!

Jeron: I guess I'm a "dedicated Doyle fan" because I have everything you have except Exit To Eden, and I have everything you need to get, plus I have Quest For Camelot Complete.
NP: Well, As Good As It Gets just ended, and cause I was reading this thread, I tossed in Much Ado About Nothing. I agree with Marian; you DO need to get this.

Marian, I can't believe you didn't flip out on sakman up there. Carlito's Way is much more than just an "interesting attempt at an action score."Also tell Jeron that "Grand Central" is one of the Top 5 action pieces of the 90s. I'm serious.

Oops, I was going to flip out about that, but I forgot. First of all because Carlito's Way is not an action score. And yes, Grand Central is fantastic I love that little "time" motif Doyle sneaks in whenever we have to be reminded that Carlito's time is short.
One of my favourite movies, too.

Mark, I'm a pantywaist and I own 10 Patrick Doyle CDs. What you are, my friend, is worse than a pantywaist (perhaps Shaun knows exactly what that's called!).As for you, Shaun, I think you've been speaking far too much with our good friend JJ.
Marian, please tell Shaun thank you for the CD tracklistings he sent me via e-mail. Also tell him that as far as pantywaists are concerned, it takes one to know one! JJ is a pantywaist as well. Together, we form "THE PANTYWAIST CLUB!"

Yes, Patrick Doyle has two scores coming out this spring. Apparently he did do BLOW DRY (or whatever it's called now) which finally hit U.S. shores this week. Also, he's supposedly doing BRIDGET JONES' DIARY.I have no idea if either of these films' studios will deign to have any of his scores represented on the soundtrack CDs. Although I think there might be something for BRIDGET JONES' DIARY.

What surprises me most about this thread is the lackluster opinion of Doyle's Great Expectations. I think it's easily one of his strongest albums, but I've only recognized this years after its release. "Non Nobis Domine" is a fantastic piece, most definitely his finest, but the entire Henry V score doesn't really hold my interest through the duration.
And Shaun Rutherford is a pantywaist.posted 05-19-2004 07:22 AM PT (US)
