    Hi CAT!

Welcome! I am new here, too, as of this week. In fact, I didn't even know this place existed until Bill Smith tipped me, in response to an ugly event over at FSM. When I checked in, I recognized Peter's name... then Joan Hue... then a guy who calls himself 'perfektpitch', or something of that nature, - he said some very eloquent things about Elmer's HAWAII - so I concluded this might be a good place to be. A nice feeling of civility... and less defensiveness than I have been used to. Even decided to use my real name... which probably suggests I feel safe, here.

Where does CAT come from? Did you like the old TV show scored by Lalo Schifrin... or do you genuinely like felines? We have two of the latter... a Maine coon [Miss Jessica] and a tabby (?) [Renee]. We also have a German Shepherd... her name is Ceileigh... Celtic for 'good times.' And good times we have had, indeed.

BTW, I liked the admirable stance you have taken in response to the shunning of Avie, over at FSM. You must be a good person.

Wow, Bob! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for that truly, truly, truly, truly warm welcome!! All kidding aside, thanks...I really appreciate it. And thank you also for your kind words.
The name CAT is a rather long and personal story, but it is true that I am a cat lover too. I don't happen to have any cats (much to my dismay), because my husband is EXTREMELY allergic to cats. I do have one beautiful dog though. She's an Australian Cattle Dog (a Blue Heeler), and her name is Zoey. She has assumed that her mission in life is to be my sole protector, and she does her job well and faithfully. She is such a great friend!
Are you a poster at FSM as well? If so, what handle did you go under? Do we already know each other? It's really a shame what's been going on over there. People can really get out of hand, and when that happens...people get hurt. I don't like that, but I guess it's the nature of the beast, so to say.

Thank you too, Joan. It's good to see your familiar face here too, as well as Avie's, Galina's, and a few others. Wonder why it is that women are such a minority on these boards? Don't get me wrong...I'm not complaining. What gal doesn't like being surrounded by men?

Anyway, I look foward to meeting more of you, and enjoying good conversation as well.

    Truly...CAT

Every April 12, I read this thread (and a few others), and a certain rush comes over me, as if it's 4/12/1999 all over again, and we're starting anew. It's a good feeling, appropriately happening in the springtime. I think we've all had great success reaching our goals and have shaped this community quite nicely in these 4 years. Bring on the next 4!

    CAT:

I post at FSM under the name of "Amir." I chose an Arabic name because I was provoked by the triumphalism and xenophobia, evident on FSM, at the time of the commencement of George Bush's pre-emptive and unjust (and probably illegal) invasion of a sovereign nation, without UN backing. I actually intended to type "Samir", but again my technophobia resulted in a glitch. Samir is a very dear Arabic friend of mine, from Tunisia, now an environmental engineer in Australia. Actually, Samir and I were both doing Ph.D. studies, at the commencement of Gulf War 1. He knocked on my door to tell me that the American bombing of Baghdad had begun. I spent that evening watching that event with a sombre, and upset, group of Arab friends.

I am a Canadian. My country has the status of having been invaded by the United States, twice. Our confederation was born out of a fear of American aggression. Many of us resent American cultural and economic influence. I mention this only because it may help to explain the principled position taken by our political leadership. Our PM is from Quebec, and opposition to the war is highest in that province. I never would have stated this, over at FSM, as I recognized that identifying myself as a Canadian probably would have been grounds for a heap of public aspersion and invective. I could relate ugly anecdotes about how American entrepreneurs have dealt with Canadian customers, in the current context, but I choose not to.

    Hello again, Bob...

Now that I know who you are (Amir), let me say that I, too, admire your stance in the OriginalThinkr topic at FSM. YOU opened the topic, and led the way for others to follow. If you go there now, you will see that I have made an earnest plea for that topic to end, for obvious reasons.

Thank you also for being so open and honest with me about your origin and your political beliefs. I agree that this is a conversation that never would have taken place over at FSM.

Let me assure you that you have absolutely nothing to fear from me. I try to keep an open mind and a level head at all times. I look foward to discussing many things here with you, and I hope that a new friendship might help "span" the gap between our countries, and somehow at least bring a few of us closer together. Don't we deserve that much? I think so. Looking foward to hearing from you again.

    Truly...Cindy aka CAT

    Hi Cat!

I try to be open-minded and accept people, as they present themselves. Acceptance of diversity is something we humans can learn to be good at - if we try. Heck! When I first encountered Avie, I thought he had that pompous, self-righteousness that I have seen, all too often, among members of the progressive left. It was usually the source of a lot of fights and factionalism that allowed rightwingers to end up ruling the roost, in my experience, here in Canada! Despite this initial judgement, I got to know Avie, from a distance, and I value my (distant) contact with him, both on the forums, and in the private Emails we exchange. We have also exchanged scores, more than once. I like him - and I am loyal to people I believe have been treated unfairly, even if there is a personal cost.

I am not anti-American. There are lots of Canadian expatriates in your country. Some of my family, drifted south, and now reside in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Obviously, I like American filmmusic. One of your writers - Annie Proulx - is my current, favourite writer. She must like Canada because she spends her summers in Newfoundland and New Brunswick. There are also several American educators - whom I won't name (I would end up offending someone) - who have been part of my educational growth and influenced my contact with students.

My wife and I are going to watch THE ICE STORM, so I'll talk to you, later.

    Bob
