Scent of A Woman was the first collaboration between Thomas Newman and director Martin Brest (Meet Joe Black). For this criticially acclaimed film, Newman uses a subtle, classical approach, and hits the mark when it counts.
Full of melodies and moments of dramatic bliss, I wonder why the Academy didn't nominate this score in 1992. It has all the Thomas Newmanisms: flamboyance, style, substance and, most importantly, it makes a statement.
Along with the wonderful "Main Title" (featuring an English horn, guitar, bass, oboe, piano and percussion), there are the usually fun Newman cues, like "Trach House Ginch," "5th Avenue" and "Balloons." Most cues are short, but wonderful nonetheless. Two additional tango cues make this album a definite winner, especially for Newman fans.
