The movie as well as the soundtrack was truly an eye-opener in the 80s. It is still very contemporary, even today. The movie soundtrack, instead of simply providing a backdrop for the movie, or acting to set a mood, in fact, becomes very much a part of the story telling aspect of the movie. The words of the title song by Irene Cara, give meaning to the main theme: "What a Feeling," give expression to Jennifer Beal's character of having a dream and following her passion and her dream to become a professional dancer. The romantic subplot, involving her character and her boss, "Lady, Lady, Lady," gives a very emotional interpertation to their evolving relationship.
