Melancholy Found Under the Door in the Floor Listening to the original score by newcomer Marcelo Zarvos is like woe-wishing through a daydream of life's perfect moment from long, long ago. Hints of hope and happiness begin the dream ("Main Titles"), yet many sorrowfully sad notes supplant the ambience as a destitute human nature knows such perfection is as good as gone... never to happen again. Enter the Cole family (Jeff Bridges, Kim Basinger), as adapted from John Irving's novel "A Widow for One Year"; tragedy hits home and the privileged family from East Hampton is suddenly stricken with melancholia and infidelity. The tone of the 45 minute presentation of music on The Door in the Floor soundtrack CD (Decca Records) is essentially singular; the reason the movie steadily unfolds as it does. An incredibly slow rhythmic quality, sorrowfully calm, makes this CD the perfect acoustical accompaniment while reading Irving's novel. For the non-readers, prepare for a bleak lament of the rueful kind, no matter what is happening when these notes wander in. The composer, a noted Brazilian pianist, performs solo piano in this recording. PK (7/5/2004)see all reviews, or add a review
