Far Beyond the World I've Known...
The original space man! Buck is back! Capitalizing on the great success of another space war film, this once old cartoon strip found new life in 1979 amid the smorgasbord of a culture in search of itself. Disco was almost dead, electronic rock was in the birth canal, and sci-fi films continued to push the visual and musical score envelope, even if not in a forward direction. Being a kid in the 70s and early 80s meant "cool" was hi-tech movies and television shows, with the occasional run on the Rubik's Cube. Although this era's music in general was truly a mess, these years of bad electronic experimentation had an enduring quality and somehow "stuck" as something to identify with! The reflection we hear when listening to the Buck Rogers and the 25th Century soundtrack CD (Intrada) undeniably captures the wild ride that IS sci-fi soundtrack music of its time. If there was no Kipp Lennon ballad waltzing to 70s era drum kits ("Song from Buck Rogers"), no weird and funky Meco-tronic grooves ("Something Kinda Funky") or goofy tinkering on who-knows-what kind of keyboards ("Twiki & Dr.Theo"), composer Stu Phillips' music might simply be heralded as a great orchestral score highlighted by heroic action motifs punching through powerful brass sections - a description that would make this worth the purchase all on its own... but come on, if we're talking Buck Rogers, we're talking 70s mod-flavorings and out-of-this world razzle. That's why we want this. And maybe because something here might remind us of Erin Gray's Col. Wilma Deering.
